Medium vs Your own blog
Want to start a blog. Many people flock to medium as the default choice, but we’ll take a look at what’s best for you.
- Branding
Medium
Medium is… let’s just say heavy on branding. Each new user is greeted with a huge welcome screen like below.

If you open the link on your phone, medium really wants you to download their app.
Your own blog
With your own blog, you have the freedom to brand it however you like, without the intrusive medium banners in your way.
Winner: Your own blog
2. Cost
Medium
This is where Medium may have the upper edge. Medium is completely free to blog on with no added costs for hosting, domain etc.
Your own blog
With your own blog, you will have to manage the hosting costs and domain costs (if you plan to buy a domain). However, it is not too pricey to buy hosting, and sometimes can be free
Winner: Medium
3. SEO
Medium
Medium has one of the highest domain authorities on the internet — 96. This is definitely good for SEO, as your posts will appear very high on google search rankings
Your own blog
If you set up your own blog on your own domain, google is not likely to give it high google search rankings initially, and it can take time to become higher. However, if lots of people do read your blog, you ranking will become just as high.
Winner: Medium
4. Personalisation
Medium
Medium does not allow that much personalisation and although you can add your own images, there is still a lot of Medium advertising. This can be okay for some less serious bloggers, but if you don’t like this, I suggest you go with your own blog.
Your own blog
Your own blog can be styled in whatever way suits you fit, with whatever colors you seem fit. However, you may end up creating something that is not very pleasant for your readers to look at. You can also have your own domain, and this looks much cooler.
Winner: Medium
Overall, it is fair to say the Medium is a better platform to blog on, but it all depends on personal choice. More experienced bloggers may want to start their own blog, but most will stick with medium.
